The
best age to have a kitten neutered both for males and females is about 6
months. A female cat will usually come on heat for the first time between 7
and 12 months old. If you do not want to breed from her and you cannot keep
her inside whenever she is on heat, you would be wise to think of having her
spayed. The heat can also be controlled by using hormone tablets which may be
useful if you want to breed from your queen at a later date. A male cat will
usually become sexually active at about 6 months of age. If you do not intend
to use your tomcat for breeding, it is best to have him neutered at about
this age. Unneutered tomcats do produce very smelly urine which they will
spray around their territory, including your home! They also have a tendency
to fight with other cats and to roam. Neutering will safeguard your own cat
and will also help to decrease the numbers of unwanted kittens. |
